The Banquet hall of the Government House of Bayelsa State witnessed the Official Opening Ceremony of the 2014/2015 legal year celebration of the Bayelsa State Judiciary on the 13th of October, 2014.
The Judicial arm of government in Bayelsa State commenced another legal year with a thanksgiving service anchored by notable ministers within and outside the state; the first and second lesson was taken by His Excellency, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State and Hon. Justice Kate Abiri, CON, Hon. Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, respectively; after which intercessory prayers was made for the State, Country, Staff, Judges, and members of the Judicial Service Commission.
The legal year in English law as well as in other common law jurisdictions, is the calendar during which the judges sit in court. The legal year commences at the beginning of October, with a ceremony dating back to the Middle Ages in which the judges arrive in a procession from the Temple Bar to Westminster Abbey for a religious service, followed by a reception known as the Lord Chancellor's breakfast, which is held in Westminster Hall. Although in former times the judges walked the distance from Temple to Westminster, they now mostly arrive by car. The service is held by the Dean of Westminster with the reading performed by the Lord Chancellor.
In Nigeria however,the legal year is usually after the vacation of Judges of superior courts. A number of activities were embarked upon to mark the 2014/2015 legal year celebration of the Bayelsa State Judiciary.
Among the activities marking the legal year celebration was a four kilometer judicial walk from Ekeki Motor Park to the High Court Complex, on the 10th October, 2014. The judicial walk was led by the Hon. Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Hon. Justice Kate Abiri, CON, alongside the President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Daniel Ayah, Attorney-General & Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Wodu Kemasoude, Judges, Magistrates, Chief Registrars, Members of the Bar and staff of the Bayelsa State Judiciary.
Following the Judicial walk was an interactive session held at the foyer of the High Court Complex, Yenagoa among heads of court and staff of the Judiciary. The session gave members of staff to express themselves and seek for better ways to function maximally in the new legal year.
The court session held at the Chambers of the Hon. Chief Judge witnessed presentation of addresses by the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yenagoa; Hon. Attorney-General; most senior Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the Hon. Chief Judge, with the attendance men and women of substance in the legal world.
The climax of the 2014/2015 legal year celebration was the dinner party hosted by the Executive Governor State of the State at the Banquet hall.
